Latest Campfire Conversation

On Wednesday 17 June, 60 First Nations students from over ten local schools across the Banyule Nillimbik Local Council areas joined to celebrate First Nations culture! This unique collaborative venture with the Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place provided a powerful experience for all.

During the term 2 Campfire Conversations, students participated in a walk along a trail exploring local Aboriginal seasons and beliefs. Others gathered to use traditional symbols to creative design a range of timber animals.

The first term Campfire Conversation was held on Wednesday 1 April, saw a gathering of 50 energetic First Nations’ students from Rosanna Primary and neighbouring schools met to celebrate First Nation’s culture.

Students began the gathering with an Acknowledgement of Country followed by a smoking ceremony led by Wurundjeri man, Thane Garvey. It was great to wrap our tongues around the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung language and place names. Many enjoyed the pattern clay printing and painting while others designed their own tote bags with traditional symbols. Everybody loved the sausages and the company!

Thanks to Banyule Council Youth Team and leadership at the Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place for pulling the day together.
