Italian is taught as a Languages curriculum area at Rosanna Primary School. The language curriculum supports students to develop curiosity about languages and cultures in a supportive and engaging learning environment. Students visit Italian lessons once a week as part of our specialist timetable.
Italian is led by Signora Nadia. A born Italian and mutli-lingual speaker.
Learning a language helps students notice how language works and build understanding of different cultures. Italian (LOTE) supports students to listen, speak, read and interact using a new language, while also developing confidence and openness to cultural diversity.
At Rosanna Primary School we aim for students to foster the ability to communicate in Italian, understand the relationship between language and culture, develop intercultural capabilities and understand themselves as communicators.
By learning Italian our students develop:
Italian is taught to students from Prep to Year 6 through regular specialist lessons. Learning is age‑appropriate and builds gradually over time.
In the early years, students focus on listening, speaking and learning through songs, games, stories and movement. As students progress through the year levels, they develop a growing vocabulary and begin to use simple phrases to communicate ideas and participate in classroom activities.
Lessons are interactive and supportive, encouraging students to participate at their own pace. Learning may include speaking and listening activities, visual supports, music, role‑play and exploration of Italian culture, celebrations and everyday life.
Italian lessons also support links with literacy, wellbeing and intercultural understanding, helping students see language learning as part of their broader learning experience.
Italian lessons are designed to be inclusive and welcoming. Students are encouraged to try new words and sounds in a positive environment where effort and participation are valued. Prior knowledge of Italian is not required.
