The Visual Arts Curriculum

Visual arts provides students with opportunities to explore ideas, materials and techniques. Through making and responding to art, students develop confidence in expressing themselves and learn that there are many ways to communicate meaning. At Rosanna Primary School the Visual Arts curriculum aims to develop students’:

  • conceptual and perceptual ideas and representations through inquiry processes
  • knowledge and skills in using visual conventions, visual arts processes and materials
  • critical and creative thinking skills through engagement with and development of visual arts practice and creative processes
  • respect for and acknowledgement of the diverse roles, innovations, traditions, histories and cultures of artists and craftspeople; visual arts as social and cultural practices; and industry as artists and viewers or audiences
  • confidence, curiosity, imagination and enjoyment
  • personal expression through engagement with visual arts practices and ways of expressing, representing and communicating.

Visual arts Learning in the Specialist Classroom

Visual arts is taught to students from Prep to Year 6 through regular specialist lessons. Learning is age‑appropriate and builds gradually over time.

In the early years, students experiment with drawing, painting, collage and sculpture through guided exploration and play. As students progress through the year levels, they are introduced to a wider range of materials, tools and visual language, helping them develop skills, ideas and personal responses to art‑making.

Lessons encourage exploration and creativity in a safe and supportive environment. Students are supported to experiment, take creative risks and reflect on their own work and the work of others.

The focus is on the creative process rather than finished products. Lessons are adapted to support different abilities, interests and strengths.
