ParentED: Cyber Safety

Our ParentED focus provides an opportunity for parents to gather to discuss a range of significant issues that shape the parenting experience. This term parents and carers shared in a session entitled: Cyber Safety Digital Explorers, Risks & Rewards.

In this workshop Steve from Evolve Edu equipped parents and carers with the knowledge, skills, and resources they needed to guide their child/ren towards a positive and safe online experience. They will also present to staff later in the year and support a collective understanding of ways to respond and support students in a digital space.
 

Our parent/carer workshop acted to equip our school community, especially parents and carers, with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to guide their children towards a positive and safe online experience
 
Topics covered included:

• Online risks 7-12 year olds
• Popular platforms and what to watch for
• Unsafe/unwanted contact
• Responding to cyber bullying
• Minimising exposure to unsafe content
• Digital well being and setting limits

Of particular note on the night was a valuable website entitled Beacon. Beacon is a cybersafety educational app designed to keep parents and carers up-to-date with trusted, tailored information, to help keep their kids safe online. It is designed specifically for parents as a personalised, one-stop-shop for reliable information about the online world. It arms parents and carers with the knowledge they need to confidently help navigate their children’s digital behaviour and reduce harms we know are associated with being online and on screens. All who were there on the night acknowledged its value.
